New on tap is The Heavy Stone – our brand new 4.4% ABV Scottish Heavy Ale. This smooth and roasty ale features flavors and aromas of coffee, toffee, and chocolate (from the malt), complemented by notes of pine (from the hops). It’s really such a great beer to enjoy during this time of year — it’s easy drinking AND pairs very well with stews, chilis, roasted squash, and more!
Traditional Scottish Heavy Ales tend to range in ABV from 3.2 to 3.9%, and they also tend to lean slightly more towards the malty side of the spectrum. Our version is moderately “Americanized” in that we used a slightly heavier hand with the hops, making a nice even balance between the hops and the malt. In addition, we increased the grain bill a bit to get us to 4.4% ABV. Other than that, this beer falls into the typical style guidelines, with a dark brown color, light caramel-colored head, and a very smooth, enjoyable mouthfeel and medium body.
