In 1727, Benjamin Franklin organized a group of friends into a “club of mutual improvement”. The group called itself the Junto (from the Spanish word junta, or assembly) and met first in a tavern and then later in a house, to discuss moral, political, and scientific topics of the day. The members of the Junto were drawn from diverse occupations and backgrounds, but they all shared a spirit of inquiry and a desire to improve themselves, their community, and to help others.

While the concept of the Junto is almost 300 years old, we believe that the idea of bringing people together to learn, share ideas, and conduct a discussion “in the sincere spirit of inquiry after truth, without fondness for dispute or desire of victory” (as Ben Franklin put it) is much needed in our community today. As such, we are excited to be announcing our first Throwback Junto meeting, to be held here at Throwback Brewery on Wednesday, January 23rd at 6:30pm.

The First Topic

To kick things off, we are going to pick the first topic for discussion, which is marijuana legalization. We’ve picked a few articles that we suggest folks read to help kickstart the discussion: Given the debate in our state and upcoming proposed legislation, we thought this would be a timely topic!

Topics for subsequent meetings will be decided by the group.

The Ground Rules

We are going to throw it back to model our rules after the original Junto, but with a bit less formality. So, the rules are:

  • We agree to provide a mutually respectful environment
  • We agree to respect each other and opinions, even if they are different than our own
  • We agree to keep each other mutually accountable for peaceful conversation and learning

For the first meeting, one of us will be a casual facilitator, to help break the ice and keep the conversation moving.
