Well, here we are already. Every year it seems to go faster than the last! Yes, we are already up to the last beer in our Unafraid of the Dark V series. This year we really tried to come up with a set of beers that were pretty different from each other in terms of flavor profile and style. We made a Black Lager with cherries, an Imperial Porter with plums, a Sweet Stout with carrots, a Cascadian Dark Ale with balsam and juniper, an Oatmeal Stout with honey, and now, a Robust Porter with smoked apples.

If you like smoked beers like our Campfire, you are going to love this one! It’s packed with flavor – both roasty and smokey. The body is surprisingly light, and you get a bit of apple at the end.

So how did we make this beer? Well, we first sat down and did a taste test of four different apples (from Applecrest in Hampton Falls, NH).

The Taste Test!

We decided to go with the Mutsu and Ida Red varieties. We smoked 55 lbs of these apples and added them to the secondary. As we do with our grain, we smoked the apples right here at Throwback on applewood.

The Result – Applewood Smoked Apples

Finally, we added 2 gallons of cider to the fermenter.

So what can you expect when you try this beer? Here are the tasting notes from our team:
– Appearance: This beer is a lighter shade of black with reddish understones, and the head is burnt caramel in color.
– Aroma: Moderate smoke. A touch of apple sweetness.
– Taste & Mouthfeel: The body is quite light for a porter – we find it quite refreshing. The smoke is just the right amount – not too much, not too little. Once you take a sip, a smokey, caramel sweetness with linger for a while on your tongue. Don’t expect a lot of apple. Since we smoked the apples, that is the predominant flavor that comes through. That being said, there is some sweetness from the apples that balances out the smoke.
– Pairing: If you have this beer while here at the brewery, we recommend pairing it with our Duck Pastrami sandwich or Throwback Burger. At home, try it with any type of BBQ, burgers, roasted meats, and chocolate-y desserts.
– Serving glass: We will be serving this in a 16 oz pub glass.
– Stats – ABV is 5.0%  and IBU is 23.

All in all, we are really digging this beer! We love the smoke, we love the lightness in the body, we love how well it pairs with food. Interested in trying it out? Smoked Apple Porter will be available starting today, Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016. Hopefully we will see you soon!
