Brevis and Bretthead is a fruited, golden-colored, barrel-fermented farmhouse ale – made for fans of the funk! Enhanced with a plethora of different yeasts and fruits (including pineapple, mango, peach, and apricot), this funky farmhouse ale has been aging for years (yes, years) in a punch-eon. Part of our Rare Breed Series, this beer will be served here via draft and can be taken home in 375ml bottles.

Here are our tasting notes:

Appearance: glowing golden color with some haze

Aroma: Initial notes of funk with earthy pineapple, peach, and apricot lead to a mild sweet strawberry aroma.

Flavor: This beer features flavors of Brett earthiness with a punch of tart lemon notes, followed by pineapple, apricot, and peach. It finishes with a bread-y, fruit cake note. While we added the most of the pineapple, mango, apricot, and peach fruits, we also added blood orange, blueberry, and strawberry, so you might be able to detect slight notes of these in the beer, too!

The classic funk and Brett earthiness in this beer is the result of a whole host of yeasts that we pitched into the barrel: Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolates, Saccharomyces fermentati, five Brettanomyces strains, Lactobacillus brevis, Lacto Delbreuckii and Pediococcus Damnosus. Using a bunch of yeasts like this is what is referred to as a mixed culture fermentation.

Body: The body on this beer is surprisingly full for a sour / funk beer.

Our Rare Breed series features the very best beers from our barrel program. Each beer has been carefully vetted by our brewers and owners to ensure that they are extraordinary enough to be bottled and shared with you!
